![]() Hello dear readers! I hope your summer has been nothing but exciting. I went to Taichung to train some students on Model United Nations. We had a blast talking about critical thinking, global politics, local politics in relation to social media, and fake news. It was amazing to see students light up as we discussed possible conflicts of interest among countries and how the YouTube political use is actually just a transient form of the fireside talks President Roosevelt used to do in the US. As the school year for Taiwan has started, there are many things that are swirling in my bowl of tasks. First off, the students I tutor. There are the high school seniors who are prepping for their college entrance exams. Then there's the kids who just entered middle and high school. And then there's the kids who truly want to head to the US as a legitimate college freshman instead of some person who's parents happen to have money to send them to the US. I am grateful that over the years, these are the students that usually come to me for quality education. But what is going to take up much of my school year are school workshops, lectures, and talks on Model United Nations and English Debate. Somehow, through pure strokes of luck, I have positioned myself within hand's reach of the new 108 curriculum the Ministry of Education has planned to execute in 2019, which is RIGHT NOW! I began the school year with training student judges for TFG (Taipei First Girl's High School) freshman Eng Debate Cup. I trained students to think from the judge's perspective and understand the need for balance between passion and logic. Sometimes it is hard to be objective, but as judges, we try our best to provide great judging. The Wordsmith Deck was employed to boost the young brains on a Friday evening. Luckily everyone had a great time and it really made an impact on everyone, especially those who volunteered to be judges from 6 different high school's MUN clubs. I am very fortunate to continue coaching Taoyuan's Wuling Senior High School (WLSH) English Debate team while receiving offers from private and public schools around Taiwan to help out with matters of critical thinking.
Currently my September and October schedule include 3 WLSH Internal English debate workshops. It is exciting because it is one of the first times I have students and myself working in a joint effort to make the workshop happen. Aside from that, there are some MUN/debate teaching opportunities around Taiwan that are waiting to be scheduled as well, some of the calls for help are coming from Tainan. Lastly, there's some kind of civics-related course that requires some critical thinking and debate skills. It is also coming my way in December in Taichung. I think Q3 and Q4 of 2019 is looking pretty amazing. I hope I can juggle properly and make everything happen. I will also try to schedule in some timely exercises to improve my overall health and stamina to push on under such rigorous workloads. Cheers and hope to update you all soon!
